Storm Advance With 3-1 Victory Over Hurricanes
2/13/2020 12:25

Teaneck, NJOn Wednesday night, February 12th, the 3rd-seeded HANC Hurricanes visited the 2nd-seeded TABC Storm at the WeatherCenter, in a battle for “weather supremacy”, and a chance to play in the semi-finals. Throughout the game, both teams had many chances, but both goalies, Chaim Mermelstein for TABC and Joey Diamond for the ‘Canes, played well and came up big when needed most. Special teams truly proved to be the deciding factor, as TABC netted 2 power play goals, and HANC scored 1.

TABC started the scoring off late in the first period, as Tzvi Naor sniped a shot top-shelf on a feed from Eitan Adler on the power play. The first period ended with TABC leading 1-0.

On the first shift of the second period, TABC took a delay of game penalty. Halfway through HANC’s power play, Jordan Gejerman hit Eli Weiss with a perfect pass across, and Weiss put it in the back of the net to tie the game at 1 apiece. About halfway through the second period, TABC got another power play opportunity. Fortunately, for the Storm, they got a rare no-goal call overturned. Adler brought the ball around the net and passed it to AJ Seplowitz, who promptly settled the pass and ripped a shot on net. The shot beat Diamond but pinged off the post and then off the crossbar — or so they thought. Play continued until the next whistle, about 20 seconds later. At that point, the referees gathered for a quick meeting. After a minute or 2 of discussion, the referees determined that Seplowitz’s shot in fact hit the post and then shot off the inner crossbar and immediately out of the net and back into play, resulting in a power play goal for the Storm. For the remainder of the period, TABC continued to bring the pressure. With one minute left in the period, Joey Zelig took a shot from the side of the net, which resulted in a juicy rebound that Seplowitz cleaned up for his second goal of the game.

The third period brought more of the same, as TABC continued to pressure, but HANC refused to back down. Diamond continued to play well in net, keeping HANC in contention until the final buzzer.

Through and through, both teams played a hard-fought, clean game. HANC can look forward to the future with excitement, as their team was made up of 9 freshman, including Diamond and Gejerman, as opposed to only 2 sophomores. As for TABC, they await the winner of MTA @ DRS to determine their semi-final opponent.
